DTG... Expanding our printing possibilities!

Expanded printing possibilities for us at Midwest Graphics means expanded possibilities for our customers in Dexter, Ann Arbor, and the Metro Detroit Area.

Direct-to-garment printing (DTG) expands our ink palette in what we can print on a shirt. This means opening things up for more creative designs, more vibrant colors, and a quicker turn!

Direct-to-Garment FAQ

What is Direct-to-Garment (DTG) Printing?

Direct-to-Garment (DTG) printing is a method of garment decorating that utilizes and water-based inkjet printer somewhat similar to the inkjet printers you have at home and in the office, just in a larger format.

If this DTG is essentially printed using a printer, does the final product actually look like screen printing?

Absolutely, you’re not sacrificing any quality with DTG print. It looks and feels like a traditional screen printed shirt.

What is the major difference between DTG and Screen Printing?

Midwest Graphics uses four different printing methods including DTG, screenprinting, heat sublimation, and flat-stock.

When it comes to DTG and screenprinting head-to-head, DTG uses water-based ink as opposed to plastisol-based inks utilized by our screen printing presses. Because of this DTG prints will feature a lighter print on the shirt as the ink is absorbed into the material a little more.

Also, since DTG prints don’t utilize a screen, there’s less prep time meaning a quicker turn for customers. However, a single DTG garment with three colors can take up to two minutes to print as opposed to the seconds it takes for a screen-printed garment.

How many colors can be used on DTG prints?

There really is no limit. The only things you’re limited by are neon and metallic colors which the DTG printer is unable to produce.

Is DTG printing high volume?

Due to the time, it takes for a single print. on the DTG (two minutes for a three-color print) Direct-to-Garment jobs are best kept at a maximum of 20-25 total items. Anything beyond that is best suited for screen printing.

Can the DTG print photos on a shirt?

Yes! Unlike screenprinting, the DTG printer will print photographs on garments. Please make sure when you submit your artwork all photographs are either high resolution (300 dpi or above) .pdf’s or .jpgs.

What kind of art files will you accept for DTG prints?

Like anything else, we prefer vector-based artwork in a .ai or .eps format. However, it’s not as vital that we get those formats for DTG printing as high-resolution bitmaps like jpg’s and .png’s also work.

Can any kind of garment be DTG printed?

Unfortunately no. 100 percent cotton or 50/50’s (cotton/polyester) and 60/40 blends are the best options for DTG printing. Generally speaking, tri-blends aren’t suitable for DTG prints, however, some vendors are beginning to distribute DTG friendly tri-blends. If you’re interested, please let us know!

Is there any post production care for DTG printed shirts?

Yes, please wash all DTG printed shirts in cold water inside out and tumble dry low or hang dry. Do not iron.
